A ''limit theorem'' is a result stating that the large-scale structure of some random system can be meaningfully approximated by some typical probability distribution. Distinguished examples are the Central Limit Theorem, the Donsker invariance principle, as well as the circular and semicircular laws in random matrix theory. On the other hand, we call a ''probabilistic approximation'' any mathematical statement allowing one to assess the distance between the laws of two random elements.
